ABOUT THE RESIDENCY

[codex] I. is an international, process-oriented residency for musical instrument inventors, designers, makers, and developers examining paradigms as musical knowledge. Bringing together participants across artistic, craft, technological, and research contexts, it moves from articulating practices and inherited models toward prototyping, experimentation, and public presentation at the seventh Bled Contemporary Music Week in Bled, Slovenia (EU).

The program comprises four online seminars and a concluding on-site residency. Its extended structure gives participants time to map instrumental genealogies through presentation, dialogue, listening, source study, material inquiry, analysis, design, fabrication, coding, prototyping, testing, documentation, and critical reflection.

Participants may bring an acoustic, mechanical, electromechanical, electronic, digital, or hybrid instrument; an interface, controller, sound-producing object, software–hardware system, fabrication process, research question, or developing prototype. Each becomes a point of departure for examining the paradigms through which instruments are conceived, constructed, played, evaluated, circulated, and renewed.

Rather than presenting invention as linear progress from established instruments toward novelty, [codex] creates a reciprocal process in which concepts, materials, mechanisms, interfaces, judgments, and criteria remain open to inquiry. Historical models, bodies, tools, components, software, workshops, institutions, industries, and communities become carriers and producers of musical paradigms.

Participants investigate how originality, authenticity, and excellence were historically constituted; how instruments organize gesture, perception, agency, and possibility; how inherited standards shape what inventors imagine, build, test, and value; and how future practices might preserve, revise, challenge, or replace them.
